Sadness

When I experience sadness, it is usually for something long-lasting or permanent, like a broken relationship or the loss of a loved one—things I cannot go back and erase. It has happened, and now I must work through the pain and overcome it.

If I could give every Christian one gift (including myself), it would be to remain steadfast in Him, even in sadness. Because I know it is hard for me to cleave to Him when I am in so much pain, and I suspect it is for others as well.

The Bible tells us that in this world, we will have tribulation; but to be of good cheer, for Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33). I wish He meant that tribulation would be something simple. But the wise Christian in me knows there is no such thing. Real tribulation involves pain and sadness, in some ways we can understand, but in many ways we cannot.

God experienced it (Genesis 6:6).

David experienced it (2 Samuel 12:22).

Jesus experienced it (Matthew 26:37, 38).

You will continue to experience it, and so will I (1 Peter 4:12).

God is excellent and ever mindful of us (Psalm 8). In the end, He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and remove every sorrow (Revelation 21:4).
