More Than Surprised

Mary’s life was full of surprises.

First, an angel appeared announcing that she would give birth to Christ the Risen Savior (Luke 1:26-35). Mary responded with a heart of obedience and praise (Luke 1:38; 46-56).

You might think that she would get special treatment for being the mother of Jesus. Maybe deliver the Child in a five-star facility. Instead, she delivered in a cave designed for animals. No five-star facility. No room at the inn (Luke 2:7).

Then shepherds came to visit and told of their experience of a miraculous birth announcement and heavenly praise party (Luke 2:8-18). Later, Simeon blessed the Child (Luke 2:29-33) and prophesied regarding Mary’s own heart (Luke 2:35). Also, three wise men visited to worship the Child and offer gifts. Immediately after, Mary’s husband has a dream and fled with the family to protect their Son’s Life (Matthew 2:1-23).  The family finally settled down in the town of Nazareth (Matthew 2:1-23).

Years later, Mary tried to parent her Son but was reminded by His responses that He was not like any son, and His calling was not like any calling (Mark 3:31-35; Luke 2:41-51; John 2:1-12).

And then… (John 19:25-27)

And then… (Acts 1:14)

Mary had a front row seat to the Life of Jesus Christ, on Whom we build our faith today. What a surprise indeed!
