Message from the Messiah

Jesus comes into the midst of our ordinary every day and changes our lives forever. Consider the woman at the well (John 4:1-29, 39).

He was a stranger in her hometown. She was having an ordinary day. Before she even knows it, everything changes.

He asks her for a drink. She replies:

How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman (v. 9)?

He gives her the Message in metaphor. But she is too focused on the reality of the present (vv.11-12). He tries again (vv.13-14). She is a little more dialed in this time, but not quite (v. 15). Then He speaks pointedly to her.

Go, call your husband, and come here (v. 16).

He has her complete attention. Something unusual is happening. She confesses.

I have no husband (v. 17).

Now the way is clear for Jesus to speak to her heart.

You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly (v. 18).

And then He speaks to her spirit.

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth (vv. 23-24).

She responds.

I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things (v. 25).

Finally, He tells her what she just said she has been waiting for.

I who speak to you am He (v. 26).

This is her new reality. Her life is forever changed. She and an entire community become believers (v. 39).

Some of us don’t believe in Jesus. Not on a practical level, for our everyday lives and decisions. We need to.

Why? Because He meets us right where we are, and He wants us to come to Him. Will you?
